his thirty fifth year as a full time professional artist. Lucky for all of us, those years have been happily spent with brush & paint romancing the simple treasures of our world. Celebrating the everyday grandeur and beauty, interesting characters and the remarkable spirit that enriches our lives. The Thompson style is colorful, exquisitely detailed and sensitively evocative. The medium is mixed but mostly a blend of fine pen & ink line drawing integrated with a unique acrylic, watercolor technique. A few paintings are executed in a full-bodied method suggestive of classic oils, but again using robust acrylic color and glaze. His art is an effective blend of subject and execution, and the limited edition prints are a fine rendering of the original art.

A very brief biographical sketch…

Texas is his place of birth… 1948 the year; and from very shortly after that beginning the creative impulse has been a part of his life. Early on, he was lucky to be encouraged in his aspirations. There were short stints in technical illustration, graphic design and commercial illustration. Fortunately, in 1971 a hopeful young artist rolled out to Jackson Square in the fabulous old French Quarter of New Orleans and launched a career that was more a passion than a job. Through the ensuing years of growth and refinement his work has been exhibited primarily in gallery settings. Smiling eyes and uplifting visions have become his hallmark. Perhaps this is why he has been able to gather an enthusiastic group of Thompson patrons throughout the years. Today his studio is back in Texas and the gallery affiliations continue. Additionally, he has begun the presentation of his art and limited edition prints at a number of select, special events. We are very pleased and proud to offer his works of art in our gallery as well. let me tell you the story of Jim Hussey, one of our best known and favorite artists.

Born in 1936, Jim was educated in New Orleans, and upon completion of his academic training he began a career in the world of business.

Later in the summer of 1970 Jim decided to leave this career. Equipped only with the paints and brushes his mother had left him, an interest in art from early childhood, and inspired by his surroundings, his family, his friends, and prominent artists, he decided to leave his successful career as a salesman and merchant to pursue his love for art on a full-time basis.

In order to refine his ideas, skills and techniques, he attended the John McCrady School of Fine Arts in 1972.  The decision to pursue art proved to be a wise one for his renditions of the Old South, its many lazy bayous, and life along the Mississippi shortly became wanted by many art collectors, galleries, and museums throughout the world.

His paintings reflect personal feelings in the nostalgic and romantic moods, settings, and history of the South as seen through the eyes of numerous novelists and historians.

Like most true artists, Jim is constantly driven toward self-improvement and growth through better interpretation, increased skill and authenticity in subject matter and
composition. In his own words:

“I believe when I display realism in a painting it is as important to reflect my feeling on the mood of that subject or to tell a story much as a poet using all of the color and feeling of one’s mind, otherwise one might just as well take a photograph.”

French Quarter Festivals, Inc. Presents The 11th Annual Satchmo Summer Fest August 4-7 at the State Museum’s Old U.S. Mint

This free community event is produced by French Quarter Festivals, Inc., and is dedicated to the life, music and legacy of New Orleans’ native son, Louis ‘Satchmo’ Armstrong.

Satchmo Summer Fest is scheduled every year to coincide with Louis Armstrong’s birthday on August 4th. Satchmo used to claim in interviews that he was born on July 4, 1900 (USA Independence Day), a date that has been noted in many biographies. Armstrong died in 1971 and his true birthdate, August 4, 1901, was not discovered until the mid-1980s. Louis Armstrong was born in a poor section of New Orleans known as “the Battlefield”. Throughout his career, he entertained millions – from heads of state and royalty to the neighborhood kids on his stoop in Corona, New York. Despite his fame, he lived a simple life in a working-class neighborhood.

The man known around the world as ‘Satchmo’, short for Satchelmouth, was widely recognized as a founding father of jazz – a unique American art form. In 1932, Melody Maker magazine editor Percy Brooks greeted Armstrong in London with “Hello, Satchmo!” and the nickname stuck. His influence, as an artist and cultural icon, is universal, unmatched, and very much alive today. Armstrong was a charismatic and innovative performer whose improvised solo-ing was the main influence for a fundamental change in jazz. As one of the most famous musicians of the 20th century, he was first known as a cornet player, then as a trumpet player, and toward the end of his career he was best known as a vocalist and influential jazz singer.

As in previous years, you can expect great live local music all weekend on 2 festival stages featuring traditional jazz, contemporary jazz, brass bands and children’s programming. Some of the performers who play the festival include: Leroy Jones, Jeremy Davenport, Connie Jones’ Crescent City Jazz Band, Yoshio Toyama and the Dixie Saints, The Palmetto Bug Stompers, Shamarr Allen, Rebirth Brass Band, Tim Laughlin, Soul Rebels, Treme Brass Band, Leah Chase, James Andrews, and the Lars Edegran’s New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra. There will be programming for kids also.

In addition to great music and family fun, you can find a host of free seminars and discussions featuring a host of speakers, including recording industry icon George Avakian (Armstrong’s producer and friend); Michael Cogswell of the Armstrong House; Archives; noted Armstrong scholar and winner of multiple Grammy Awards Dan Morgenstern; writer and Armstrong film collector Ricky Riccardi; Yoshio Toyoma, aka ‘Satchmo of Japan,’ who also performs with his Dixie Saints; and much more.

New at this year’s Essence Music Festival will be a featured performance by the winner of the Essence R&B Star contest hosted by R&B singing star and producer, Perri “Pebbles” Reid. Contestants from all over the U.S. are competing in three cities, Atlanta, Los Angeles and New York, with the winner receiving a record and management deal, in addition to a Superdome mainstage appearance at EssenceFest.
